Wildwod Wildlife Walk

Walk at Wildwood (instead of ski and snowshoe)

For the third year in a row the weather did not cooperate so the ski/snowshoe event became a walk.

On Saturday, February 24, nine naturalists met in the parking lot at Wildwood. We started by walking through the trailer park towards the Murray Forest. Almost immediately we saw a flock of small birds flying into the tops of the conifers and birch trees. Listening to the calls we identified them as 40 Pine Siskins; eventually everyone got a good look. The trails in the forest were icy or flooded so we continued around the paved roads in the campground and through the highway underpass.

The trail west of the highway was passable so we walked through the conifer woods to the base of the dam. Wildlife was restricted to birds. Sightings include robins, many vocal Blue Jays, a Great Blue Heron and a flooded field of blacks and Mallards. After a couple of hours on the trail we decided we had sufficient exercise so headed for a debriefing at Tim’s. Thanks to all for an enjoyable morning.
